About Us

Welcome from the Academic Director

Welcome to the virtual home of the project “Towards Future Interconnected Electricity System”.  Funded by the Alberta Power Industry Consortium (APIC) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Alliance grant, this project takes a holistic approach to the energy transition and evolution of electric power systems. The business of electric power utilities and system operators reaches well beyond the traditional power engineering and the corresponding issues are best addressed in an integrated way. This project develops innovative solutions to keep the interconnected electric system operating with high reliability and efficiency in the face of integration of large amounts of renewable and distributed energy resources, using advanced power electronic devices and systems, while dealing with unprecedented amounts of grid and customer data, and new safety and security risks. In addition to benefits to participating utilities and system operators, the activities of the project bring significant outcomes to the power industry at large, electricity users, and the environment. We also prepare a future workforce that will seamlessly transition into the Alberta power industry, helping project partners and Canada at large to move smoothly into the era of smart grids. Students have opportunity to participate in industry fora, academic seminars and energy hackathons to expand their knowledge and hone their skills.
